Are you tired of extreme temperatures, either scorching hot coast deserts or an early preview of winter in autumn? Well, the mildness of Madeira will be perfect for you! We’ll go over some of the reasons why you should consider an autumn holiday in Madeira as well as what temperatures you can expect there.
Autumn weather in Madeira
September, November and December
The weather in Madeira in autumn is simply lovely. While September is still quite similar to summer, October and November are a bit more rainy (so take an umbrella with you just in case). Don’t worry though, it’s not like it actually rains a lot in Madeira. The average temperatures in autumn range from 23-26 degrees Celsius. It’s a perfect range for something slightly warmer than our chilly autumn days and simultaneously not a re-upload of hot summers. But what can you do in Madeira with that perfect temperature?
Dolphin and whale watching in Madeira
What to do in Madeira in autumn?
If you’re interested in going for whale or dolphin watching cruises, Madeira is the perfect place to do so. The price of such an attraction is between €30 and €80 per person for a 4-hour cruise. You can ask the residents about a local guide who could do it for cheaper, especially as there are way fewer tourists here in the low season. You may be able to see orcas, dolphins, humpback whales and even blue whales.
Fruit and wine in Madeira
What will you find in Madeira in autumn?
Autumn is the season of fruit and wine in Madeira, so if you’re a glutton like us and love good wine too, it’s the best season. It’s certainly worth focusing on fresh fruit in autumn – bananas, guavas, grapes, prickly pears, mangoes and pitangas. You can also buy a bottle of Madeira wine locally, which is just delicious.
Surfing in Madeira
Where to go surfing in Madeira?
Madeira is also a great spot to surf in. Even though the best time for surfing here is winter, autumn months do the trick as well. Where will you find the best waves? You can count on the west and south-west of the island. Porto Santo and its coasts are also a good spot.
Less crowds in Madeira
Fewer tourists and lower prices in Madeira
Another point, which we’ve already mentioned, is the matter of tourists and prices. Tourists usually flock here in the summer, so you can dodge the main wave and choose November, for instance. Additionally, because it’s the low season, prices for accommodation and other services go down drastically, by up to a couple dozen percent.
Weather in September
September temperatures in Madeira
September is a very warm month in Madeira, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius. It rains a little more than in summer, though it’s still very tame. If you want to skip the holiday season by just a hair and still want relatively low rains, September is a good time. At night, temperatures drop to ‘just’ 20 degrees.
Weather in October

Temperatures thankfully don’t change much during these months, so you can continue to relax at around 24-25 degrees Celsius. It does, however, start to rain a little more, so do take an umbrella or a poncho with you.
Weather in November
November temperatures in Madeira
It’s still comparably warm in November, though there’s much more rain, three times as much as in September and six times more than in July. As such, November may not be the best time for most people, though if you’re a fan of rainy weather then Madeira’s mountains and forests look absolutely magical in November.
