Guide to the Chania International Airport

Are you flying to Crete and you’d like to get to Chania? You’re in luck, as there’s a dedicated airport just for that! Today, we’ll go over where you’ll find the Chania Airport and how you can get from it to the city itself and a few other places. Let’s take a look!

Where is Chania Airport located?

The Chania International Airport is located about 8.7 miles away from Chania, in the western part of Crete. There’s also a town closer to the airport, Souda. You may also sometimes see the airport referred to as ‘Daskalogiannis’ – this is a tribute to a Cretan rebel, named Ioannis Vlachos (and nicknamed Daskalogiannis), who fought against the Ottomans in the 18th century.

You can get to many of the best attractions in Crete from here quite easily.

How to get from the airport to Chania?

You’ll find three options next door from the airport – a taxi terminal, a bus stop and a car hire. Buses are operated by KTEL and they leave for Chania directly –  you’ll find the stop between arrivals and departures. Tickets cost €2.5 and the bus roams from 6am to 10:40pm. You can find the timetables here

You can also opt for a taxi – the journey takes about half an hour and it’ll cost you around €25 (remember to settle the price in advance, so they can’t later ask you for some bonkers sums). In the high season, you may actually need to book a taxi earlier, as they can sometimes disappear altogether.

Chania Airport to Heraklion

You can also get to other cities from the Chania Airport – Heraklion, for instance, is about two hours away. The quickest way to get there would be to hire a car from the rental company on site at the airport. A much slower albeit much cheaper way is to take a bus – the journey takes not two but three hours and the ticket costs about €18.5 in total. There’s also no direct connection, so you’ll have to take either one of the two joined routes: Airport – Chania and Chania-Rethymno – Heraklion or Airport-Rethymno and Chania-Rethymno – Heraklion. You can find them on the same page as prior, here

Chania Airport to Rethymno

You can also go directly to Rethymno, either by bus or by taxi. Taxi will take about 90 minutes and it’ll cost you around €100, so it’s pretty hefty. Here, also, settle the price before departing, or else it gets really spooky. You can also hire a car or take the bus, same as in the previous two options.

Shops and services at the Chania Airport

Chania Airport is small, so there isn’t much excess here – you’ll find everything you’ll need, though. There’s an ATM, a couple of cafes, small shops and a currency exchange. There’s, however, no luggage storage facility. At least there’s wi-fi. The airport’s open 24 hours a day.
