Choosing a holiday destination is not always so easy – especially today, when pretty much every place wants to assure you that they’ve got everything you may ever need, how do you even decide which one’s right for you? As such, today, we’ll try to settle a matter of whether you should pick Rhodes or Corfu for your holidays. Let’s take a look!
Rhodes vs Corfu: which one has better weather?
Rhodes is located in the south-eastern part of the Aegean Sea. It has a hot-summer dry Mediterranean climate, meaning that you’ve got decently warm weather all year round with particularly hot and rainless summers. July and August typically do not drop below 30 degrees Celsius often (or, like, ever). During the high season, due to the lack of rain, your only saving grace from the heat is the Meltemi wind which blows from the north.
Corfu is located in the Ionian Sea, on the other side of Greece. Corfu also has a hot-summer dry Mediterranean climate, so you can expect very similar weather here. Day temperatures are basically identical in both cases – the only difference is that Corfu has colder nights and slightly more rain overall. In practice, the night temperatures don’t matter all that much and the ‘rainy’ Corfu has two whooping days of rain a month in summer. In short, it’s not a big deal and you won’t go wrong with either, though Rhodes does have that tiniest bit of an edge.
Rhodes vs Corfu: which one has better beaches?
Here, we again have to say that both islands are stellar. That’s what you can expect in regards to all of the Greek islands: they excel in beach contents. In the case of Rhodes, its beaches tend to be more gravel-like in the west with a sharp descent to the sea. The opposite is true on the eastern side. Rhodes vs Corfu: water sports?
One note in regards to beaches is that Rhodes is hit by the northern Meltemi wind, most noticeable in the north. It specifically comes during the summer season, so Rhodes is also perfect for wind sports. Do be aware, however, that the wind can sometimes be very strong and sudden, so tread with caution. Corfu also has some strong winds, though these are mostly present in the low season. As such, Rhodes is quite a bit better if you want to try water sports in the summer.
Rhodes vs Corfu: which one has better parties?
We certainly recommend Rhodes here. The island’s capital is well-known for its wide array of great clubs and bars. On Corfu, you won’t find too many discos and loud parties – the exception is Kavos in the south of the island, that’s the one hub.
So what’s the verdict? Generally, beaches and weather are fantastic in both cases, so you don’t have much to worry about either way. If you seek parties and clubs, we’d certainly say that Rhodes wins that one. Same with water sports. So what’s the niche for Corfu? It’s a bit less besieged by tourists and it’s more of a relaxing place than a party hub.
