Are there beaches in Athens?

If you’re going to Athens for your holiday but, secretly (don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone), you’d much rather be melting on a beach than looking at the big history stuff, can you find a getaway in Athens? Are there beaches near Athens? Let’s take a look.

Beaches in Athens?

If we’re looking only at ancient Athens, then that little area has no direct access to the coast, and thus has no beaches. The actual modern Athens, though, is a massive urban area encompassing the entire coastline of the Attic peninsula. The whole metropolitan area has over 3.5 mln population, with people occupying space from coast to coast.

As such, yes, you totally have beaches in Athens. Plenty of them even, though they’re not usually what we’d consider the best beaches in Greece. The ones we’d recommend you check out are: the Kalamaki Beach, Freatida and Votsalakia. If you want to see the actual stunning beaches of Greece, we’d recommend you head out to one of the Greek islands!
