Should you go to Athens in October?

In our part of Europe, October is when autumn slowly begins to remind us of the winter creeping around the corner. As such, it’s no wonder that so many yearn for an escape already. If you’re thinking so too and you’ve got Athens on your mind, we’ll go over what weather you can expect in the Greek capital in autumn.

Is it warm in Athens in October?

For a shorthand version, the weather in Athens in October is very pleasant. Though you may think that summer would be long gone by this point, it’s not entirely correct. Though you won’t encounter 35°C heat waves, you may still encounter temperatures close to 30°C sometimes.

On average, however, you should expect about 26°C at the beginning of the month and a decrease to 22°C by the end. It’s still totally warm enough to explore, hit up a beach and take a long evening walk. Though you may want something extra for the last one, as nights are where winter’s whispers are most audible – you can expect 16-17°C at the beginning of the month and 13°C at the end.

Finally, you can also totally go for a swim in October! The sea is at 22°C, so it’s still very nice and will stay an option even in November.

Does it rain in Athens in October?

Thankfully, the one caveat of the autumn season that many places struggle with does not apply here either – it rarely rains at all in Athens in November. You can expect around 3-4 days a month. It’s still more than in the three previous months combined but you’ve handled worse, don’t fret.

As you can see, October in Athens is perhaps no Cyprus but it’s still darn warm and a perfect opportunity to visit Greece with slightly less people clogging the city. You may also find the prices lower due to the decreased tourist count.
