Is Crete an independent country? Is it in the European Union?

You’ve likely heard of Crete – you may associate it with wondrous beaches and ancient monuments. That’s spot on, buddy. But what beyond it? Is Crete a country or does it belong to one? Is it in Europe and/or the European Union? Let’s go over the basics today.

Crete is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8132 km2. Though there are smaller independent countries out there than that, Crete is not one itself. Instead, Crete is a part of Greece. Given that Crete is in Greece, it’s also, by extension, in the European Union. As such, if you’re an EU citizen, all you need is a passport or an ID to enter the island.

Crete is also a part of Europe – this may seem more obvious than it is, as Crete is located at a crossroads between three continents, being only a little bit closer to Europe than to Africa. Though it could be disputed over, we formally recognise Crete as an European island.

We hope you’ll give Crete a shot, as it’s a beautiful place with lots to offer. If you’d like to learn more about what you can find in Crete, check out our post on what to do in Crete!
