The Mediterranean Sea attracts hordes of tourists every year, and there’s a good chance that you may be joining one next holiday season too. The warm air temperatures surrounding it are always one of the main selling points, but what about the waters? How warm is the Mediterranean Sea? What are the water temperatures in Crete, Cyprus, Sicily and Spain?

How warm is the water in the Mediterranean in May?

The coldest waters in Spain fluctuate around 17-19 degrees celsius. You can expect the lowest temperatures in Barcelona and near Gibraltar. In Italy, the temperatures of the Mediterranean range from 18.2 degrees in Genoa to 19.1 degrees around Rome and Palermo. In Greece, Athens more specifically, the waters are around 18.5 degrees Celsius. In Crete, you can expect even 19.8 degrees.

The warmest water is in Cyprus, at around 21 degrees, and in Tel-Aviv, same values.

It’s obviously a bit warmer than May already, ranging from 21 to as much as 25 degrees Celsius. The coolest is Malaga and Gibraltar, around 21. Sicily will have waters at around 23 degrees. Greece is also very warm, ranging from 21.8 to 24.3 degrees on Crete.

Cyprus and Tel-Awiw win the race again in June – you can bathe in 24.9 degrees in Cyprus, with Tel-Awiw waters being even slightly warmer.

How warm is the water in the Mediterranean in July?

Spanish waters in July reach around 23 degrees in Barcelona and 25 in Valencia. It’s the warmest period for Italy, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 26.2 degrees Celsius. Crete sits at respectable 25 degrees, while mainland Greece reaches as high as 26.4 degrees. Malta, too, fluctuates around 25.

Cyprus and Tel-Aviv are, expectedly, at the top here too: Cyprus reaching 27.8 degrees Celsius and Tel-Aviv 27.6, slightly below Cyprus for once.

How warm is the water in the Mediterranean in August?

Even warmer. Spanish water temperatures jump between 22 and slightly over 26 degrees. Italian costs are slightly warmer, at 24-26.6 degrees. Going further south, Malta’s waters are similar to Sicily’s this month, at an average 26 degrees Celsius. Greece ranges from 26 degrees in Athens to 27 in Crete and Rhodes.

Cyprus’ waters in Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca are over 28 degrees above zero. Waters in Tel-Aviv go as high as 28.7 degrees! Doesn’t get much warmer than that.

 

Where is the place with the warmest water in the Mediterranean?

If you are looking for the warmest water, then choose Cyprus, Israel or the Greek islands.
Waters in Cyprus can reach as high as 28 degrees, Israel’s 29 and Crete or Rhodes can get to 27. All will be perfect for long, pleasant swims.
