Considering going on a winter trip but not sure where’ll be warm enough? Or perhaps you’re already considering Lanzarote but are not yet entirely sold on it? Oh dear, is it going to be warm enough? Will I need three jackets? Is it warm in Lanzarote in winter? And whether it is or not, are winter holidays in Lanzarote worth it?

Fret not, for today’s post will go over winter in Lanzarote, what the weather is usually like and the best things you can do there in December, January and February.

Hikes in Lanzarote

trekking na Lanzarote

Lanzarote is famous for its beautiful views, which you can enjoy on a hike along the island’s trails.
It is worth going to one of the island’s viewpoints: Mirador Caldera, Mirador de Guinate or the Mirador de El Risco de Famara in Parque El Bosquecillo.

Additionally, you simply have got to try trekking in Lanzarote’s Timanfaya Park, the place with the best views on the island. This place is simply made for a long relaxing hike in winter.

Dolphin and whale watching in Lanzarote

This is one of the most fun little things you can do around Lanzarote. Many private companies offer to hire a boat or simply invite to take part in a dolphin/whale watching cruise around Lanzarote during sunset.

The price per person for such an attraction is between €20 to €85 depending on the boat standard and the amount of passengers. The ferry can drop you off at one of the nearby islands and pick you up after a few hours.

Trips to nearby islands

Lobos Hiszpania
The Lobos island near Lanzarote

Lanzarote is a part of the Canary Islands archipelago, so once you’ve explored the whole island you can simply hop on to the next one. This is especially preferable in winter given that the crowds will be smaller on each individual island, meaning the whole process will be a lot smoother and a lot more enjoyable.

Where should you sail and how to even do that in winter?
You can just take a private boat up to La Graciosa to the north of Lanzarote or to Lobos, to the south. You can actually combine this with the previous entry, the dolphin/whale watching cruise.

Winter cuisine in Lanzarote

Winter is the season of stews, soups and legumes in Lanzarote. Try Estofado, Ropa Vieja, a popular chickpea stew, or Caldo de Millo, a corn soup to warm up your ‘chilly’ evenings.
Lanzarote is also famous for its general seafood and fish in particular – there’s something for everyone and you’ll also find the typical summer staples in winter too.

Carnival in Lanzarote

You’ll actually have a chance to see one of the more unique events in Lanzarote in February, the Lanzarote Carnival.

It usually starts in the second half of February and continues until the second half of March. Each town has its own unique theme for the carnival and each town celebrates the Carnival on slightly different days. Get your costumes ready and join the crowds yourself when in Lanzarote!

Lanzarote weather in winter

We haven’t mentioned the temperatures with all these attractions and it may sound like it should be too cold to, for instance, traverse the whole island or watch dolphins in winter. The trick with the Canaries is that they never really get cold, nor do they have much of a winter.

Perhaps not as hot as somewhere like Cyprus in summer, but Lanzarote thermometers in December, January and February typically fluctuate between 21-25 degrees Celsius during the day and from 13-17 degrees at night.
December will probably be the rainiest of all the winter months, but don’t worry – it’s still relatively tame, as Lanzarote is not a particularly rainy island.

There isn’t much excitement between these months for Lanzarote when it comes to weather fluctuations – or for any of their months, really. It’s more and more and more of the same, and probably for the better. December? 21-23 degrees Celsius average during the day. Gentle rains, nothing akin to central Europe though.

Weather in Lanzarote in January

Once more, much of the same. In 2022, temperatures in January would reach 24 degrees Celsius during the day regularly with an average of 21 degrees and around 16 degrees at night. Rains even less than in December, so an even better month for a trip (you also skip out on the Christmas tourists).

Weather in Lanzarote in February

February in Lanzarote is usually slightly warmer than January. In 2022, temperatures would reach over 25 degrees Celsius during the day. Similar number of rainy days as in January, so no worries – none of the months in winter are particularly rainy.

So yes, ‘winter’ in Lanzarote just means Lanzarote – which is perfect if you’re looking for an escape from the snowy greyness of winter
