The Petřín Lookout Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks on the map of Prague, largely because it resembles the Eiffel Tower. Today, we’ll go over the basics of the tower: what is it, how much does it cost to enter and when can you do so. Let’s take a look!
Petřín Lookout Tower
The tower was built in 1891, so merely two years after the Eiffel Tower, on top of the Petřín hill. The hill itself is 327 metres above sea level and the tower adds 60 additional metres. In contrast, the Eiffel Tower is 378 metres tall on its own, so it’s a tiny baby cousin.
How and why was it built? Well, the constant Eiffel towers juxtapositions may be annoying but they were also the catalyst for the Petřín Tower – in 1889, Club of Czech Tourists visited Paris and were mesmerised by the Eiffel Tower. Upon their return home, they quickly scrambled together money to fund the building of another such tower in Prague. And so, after merely four months, it was built. Today, it’s under the umbrella of the City of Prague Museum.
You can get to the Petřín Lookout Tower by taking the Petřín funicular from the Újezd tram stop.
