What’s the weather like in Rhodes in summer?

Are you dreaming of summer holidays in the Greek islands? Wondering what weather you’ll find in Rhodes in May, June, July and August? Is it warm or rainy? We’ll take a look at all that today.

Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese group in the Aegean Sea. It’s said to have 300 days of sunshine a year, hence why it’s sometimes referred to as the Island of the Sun.

Rhodes has a hot-dry Mediterranean climate. This means that summers are very hot and very dry while winters have moderate temperatures and lots of rain. May doesn’t really have the proper summer heat yet, though it’s also a lot less busy as a result. June, July and August are all very hot, very dry and loaded with tourists. They’re the perfect months for by-the-book summer holidays – letting the sun lounger devour you overtime.

We’ll go over each individual month below.

Rhodes weather in May

May is the last month of spring, though it’s likely much, much warmer in Rhodes than anything we can expect at home. On average, day temperatures sit around 24°C, getting warmer the closer they get to June. Nights are a tad brisk still, at 16°C average, so not too bad but a hoodie or a jacket is recommended. The sea is around 19°C average, so it’s still a bit chilly though you can certainly take a dip.

As for rain, in typical Rhodes fashion, there’s very little of it. In May, you may encounter about two rainy days total. Days are already very long, at 14 hours of daylight. 10 of these are of pure sunshine, so it already feels like summer’s come early this year.

Rhodes weather in June

June is the proper start of summer and temperatures are sure to remind you of this. Average day temperatures jump to 29°C, with 30°C+ being a regular expected norm. Nights also jump to 21°C – you may be tempted to skip the hoodie but remember that winds make it much chillier than you may think.

Water’s also much more pleasant, at 22°C, certainly warm enough to swim in. June is also the first of the proper dry summer months, so you’d be surprised to see one rainy day. Days are still as long as in May, at 14 hours of daylight, though you get three extra hours of sunshine. Proper summer begins.

Rhodes weather in July

July and August are the true Greek island summers, with 31°C average during the day. You’d be hard pressed to find a day below 30°C and you can certainly see the thermometers reach dangerously close to the 40°C mark sometimes. Nights are even warmer, at 24°C. The sea also reaches 24°C, meaning there’s little to no shock when entering the waters from the beach. Rain’s a distant memory in July.

Remember to bring plenty of strong sunscreen with you, a hat and plenty of water. Joking around is over, as there are no breaks from overwhelming sunshine in July.

Rhodes weather in August

And even less so in August. There’s little news compared to July – day temperatures stay exactly the same, nights too, the sea gets even warmer, at 26°C average. No rain, long days, plenty of heat and lovely wind. That’s Rhodes for you.
