11 best beaches on Samos

Samos is a Greek island which is slowly rising in popularity – it simultaneously hides some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Today, we’ll go over our selection of what we deem the best beaches of Samos. Where can you take your children? Where can you find nudist beaches? All of that and more below.

Samos is a small island located in the Aegean archipelago. It has an area of 477 km² (184 square miles), so there’s quite a bit of space for beaches. And you’ll find quite a few, be they sandy, pebbly or mixed. According to myth, the Goddess Hera was born on Samos – according to actual records, Pythagoras and Epicurus were born here too. With notable figures out of the way, though, we can take a look at the beaches.

Kokkari

You’ll find many small charming mini-beaches on Kokkari with some incredible views – be aware, however, that it’s a very popular beach and, as such, it gets very crowded. You’ll have to come early to get a good spot. As it tends to be the case with beaches right next to a town, there’s plenty of equipment to rent, many restaurants and cafes. The whole town’s worth a recommendation here too!

Livadaki

According to many, the best beach on Samos. It’s built into a lovely little cove, though this does make it quite narrow. As such, it’s, again, regularly crowded. The beach itself is partly pebbly and partly sandy. You can also hire a kayak and other pieces of beach equipment here.

Tsamadou

tsamadou

Tsamadou is one of the most picturesque beaches on Samos, surrounded by incredible green cliffs. It’s located about 1.2 miles north of Kokkari. You’ll find all the necessary infrastructure on site – umbrellas, sunloungers, cafes and beach bars. There’s also a car park next to the beach.

Potami

Potami is a large beach, a real showpiece of Samos. The beach is predominantly pebbly, with beautiful azure water and gorgeous green hills. Again, all the necessary equipment and services on site. There are also waterfalls and an old Venetian castle nearby!

Mourtia

A beautiful spot with lovely azure water – you can see the Turkish Kusadasi across the bay from here. There’s also plenty of shade on the beach itself, as well as changing rooms and showers. There’s no bar or anything here, sometimes a wild food truck may appear at most. It’s much more peaceful here than on the rest of the popular beaches.

Psili Ammos

Speaking of popular beaches, here’s another one – be warned, there’ll be crowds guaranteed. Plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, as well as equipment hires. It’s a great spot for kids – the descent into the water is very shallow, so you won’t have to be paranoid about them all the time.

Psalida on Samiopoula

Samiopoula

Samiopoula basically means little Samos. Psalida is a desolate beach which you can only reach by boat from Samos (from the port of Pythagorio). You won’t even find umbrella hires, the staple of literally every beach in Greece, unless the staff of the ship will give you one. It’s a beautiful place, albeit the island itself is tiny, merely a kilometre long and 600 metres wide. The ferry ride costs about €40 per person, as it’s a 4-5 hour ride. As much as we can say it’s worth the trip, it’s quite a big investment of time and money, so choose it only once you’ve depleted your other options or you really, REALLY want to see Psalida.

Pappa

A small beautiful beach in the eastern part of Samos. Pappa is actually not flat – there are different levels, terraces, effectively speaking. There’s a bar, a changing room, showers and, of course, equipment rentals. If you want to find a beach for a small child, you may prefer the other options.

Veletza

A rocky beach in the northern part of the island. It tends to be a little windy due to its location. You’ll find equipment rentals here, a bar and a tavern on site.

Lemonakia

This, on the other hand, is one of the less windy beaches. It’s also pebbly, so better take some shoes. There’s a tavern, a beach and an equipment rental. We especially recommend the tavern, as it’s much higher quality than the title of a beach tavern would suggest.

Nudist beaches on Samos

Samos is also nudist-friendly. You can find nudist sections on Tsamadou, with an official section for naturists, and Tsambou, Avlakia, Lemonakia and Megalo.
