Are there sandy beaches on Santorini?

Are you looking for a Greek island with some great beaches and you’re not sure if Santorini makes the cut? After all, if you’ve seen postcards from the island, we don’t really witness many sandy beaches there. What gives? Are there actual beaches on Santorini? Let’s take a look.

Much of the coastline of Santorini consists of tall cliffs and steep seashores, hence why the question arises. Does Santorini have beaches? Yes, there are beaches on Santorini, though you won’t find your typical long golden beaches of Crete or Cyprus here. Thanks to its location on the caldera of a volcano, the beaches of the island look a tad different.

Most of the beaches on Santorini are rocky, quite painful on the feet. You can find sandy beaches on the island, though you may be surprised by the sand – it’s most often dark, almost black-ish. There’s even an area on the island with red sand. Typically, many of these beaches will have all the typical equipment you’d expect from beaches, though nothing excessive. Santorini is not really your typical beach-holiday island and, if that’s what you’re craving, you’re probably better off with Crete or Rhodes.
