You may have heard that Sardinia is one of the best holiday destinations in Europe. It’s safe, it’s got lovely food and it’s warm. But just how warm? If you’re thinking of summer holidays in Sardinia, we’ll go over a couple of reasons why it’s a great idea. We’ll also take a look at what weather you can expect in each of the summer months. Let’s take a look!
It’s very hot
It’s likely no revelation that these months will be the hottest of the year in Sardinia. If you love the heat and yearn for nothing more but being scorched on a beach, Sardinia will be perfect for you. Temperatures don’t go below 30°C often in these months and July of 2023 saw a select few days go above 40°C (peak was on 24.07, 45°C). Thankfully, the sea breeze can make these temperatures less overwhelming. Still, bring hats, plenty of sunscreen and water.
All tourist attractions in Sardinia
With the coming of the high season, all tourist attractions around the island open up and cultural events flood the calendars. Italians themselves love to spend their August in Sardinia, so that’s when most of the cultural richness will come out. Shops will also likely stock up on more goodies!
Summer carnival in Sardinia
In the summer, a festival is held in the town of Muravera. If you’ve seen Sardinians in creepy black masks, that’s where that image comes from. The procession moves in a steady rhythm to the sound of eerie music and cow bells. Though this is but one carnival on the island, it’s so unique that we’d highly encourage you to see it for yourself.
It can still be cheap
Naturally, the high season is always more expensive than the rest of the year. We can’t fool around and tell you that ‘oh no, no, dear, winter in Sardinia is pretty comparable’. It’s not. But you can still get away with a summer holiday on a budget. August is the most expensive, with the additional influx of Italians. July is not that much cheaper, but July is more manageable.
If you look at the beginning of June, which still has beautiful weather and all the goodness of Sardinia, you’ll see lower prices. Naturally, the easiest way to save up is to gather more people for your trip.
Hiking in Sardinia
Sardinia is full of unique national parks, all perfect for walking trips in the hills or along the sea coast. The best routes are the route at Monte Arcuentu, by the waterfalls at Piscina Irga and from Masua to Bugger where you pass Cala Domestica. Do be mindful, however, of the temperatures. The heat in summer in Sardinia is no joke and we’d really prefer it if you didn’t suffer a stroke. So bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen, lots of water and don’t be silly – if it’s nearing 40°C, wait for a calmer day.
Weather in Sardinia in June
How warm is Sardinia in reality? June is the coldest of the three listed months and the historical average temperatures this month are at about 27°C, though, in the past two years, it hasn’t gone below 25°C. Nights are typically around 18°C. The sea is already pleasant, at about 20°C, though it does get a lot better later. There’s little to no rain in June either, so you can enjoy the whole month worth of heat with no interruptions.
Weather in Sardinia in July
July hasn’t seen a day below 30°C in two years now. It’s also the month where, in 2023, the temperatures peaked at 45°C. On average, you should expect about 30-34°C during the day and about 21°C at night. There’s even less rain than in June and the sea is quite amazing, at 24°C. It’s also still before the massive influx of tourists from Italy, so it’s not so bad in terms of crowds.
Weather in Sardinia in August
August is very much a replica of July, with temperatures staying where they are and the sea getting a little warmer, up to 25°C. Still practically no rain, still the same scorching sun, just with more Italians around you now. If you’re up for the crowds and the heat – it’s a great time. If you’d still like the heat but not the people, September and October would be better. 🙂
