Can you drink tap water in Porto?

Given that many of us have to save money wherever we can, especially as of recent years, not buying bottled water on holidays is both a matter of convenience and efficiency. Today, we’ll look at whether locals approve of tap water in Porto and whether you can also join them in that opinion.

To not conceal the answer beneath trivia, yes, you can drink tap water in Porto. It’s certainly drinkable, especially if you have a filter bottle with you. Though the water in Porto is not as great as some other places in the world and so many locals tend to opt for bottled water instead.

In Portugal, bottled water in a normal shop, not one for tourists, costs anywhere from €0.15 for the cheapest private label to a staggering €0.40 for better quality water, such as Vitalis. A 1.5 litre bottle of Evian water costs €1.45 in a normal shop.

The Porto Waterworks website rightly points out that the city’s water supply cannot guarantee the quality of water in any particular building. Water quality is affected by many factors including the quality of the pipes in the building, and so you may encounter water which is undrinkable in some older establishments.
