Guide to the Villa Tugendhat in Brno

Though it may seem like Villa Tugendhat is just another modern villa, you may change your mind when you hear that it was built in 1930. Villa Tugendhat is one of the first examples of such modern architecture in Europe and you can pay it a visit yourself if you’re in Brno. How much is it going to cost you? What options do you have? Let’s take a look.

The Villa Tugendhat was built by Fritz and Greta Tugendhat, husband and wife of the wealthy Jewish family. The two lived in the villa for merely 8 years before they had to flee from Nazis. Though they survived, having fled to Switzerland, they never lived in the villa again. During WW2, it was used as an office for Gestapos and even a staying place for Wilhelm Messerschmitt. For a moment in 1945, it was also occupied by the Soviets.

Later, it was renovated and continued to play a central role: it was there that the leaders of Czechoslovakia signed the document to split the country into two. Today, having consumed millions in restorative work, it stands open to visitors.
