Warmest regions in Greece in May

The Greek islands have long been a very popular tourist destination, so much so that summers mean pretty much every popular beach is swarmed instantly. As such, many tourists may want to come a tiny bit earlier, in May, for instance. Today, we’ll take a look at which part of Greece is warmest in May, so you can choose a proper pre-summer summer destination.

Which part of Greece is hottest in May?

We have to start off by saying that all of Greece is comparably warm during May, with many places sharing pretty much identical conditions. As such, in truth, you don’t have to worry about it that much.

Of the major tourist spots, though, Crete and Rhodes are always near the top. Karpathos, an island snuggled between Crete and Rhodes, tends to be the warmest spot in Greece. This is also the case for May.

All of these islands start off with an average temperature of 22°C during the day and 16°C during the night. While Rhodes and Crete have to wait until a week in for it to rise, Karpathos sees 23°C average on its second day. Crete and Rhodes end the month with an average of 25°C, getting very close to 26°C, while Karpathos reaches 26°C historical average by the 27th of May. As such, though it’s very close, Karpathos reigns victorious over these two (according to accuweather.com).

One area where it does not dominate by a tiny bit is the sea temperature. There, Rhodes wins by a tiny, tiny margin – while Crete and Karpathos have an average of 19.8°C in May, Rhodes has 20.4°C (according to seatemperature.info).

As you can see, though, these are literally a one-degree differential. Sure, northern Greece may be a bit colder, but, as far as southern Greece and Greek islands are concerned, you really can’t choose wrong here. We hope you’ll have a great time, wherever you may roam. 🙂
