One of the questions we often get is ‘should we be afraid of the immigrants in Sicily’? You’re bound to hear quite a lot about ships illegally importing refugees to the Italian ports. How does Sicily fare? There’s no doubt about the abundance of mosquitoes, but is the immigrant situation equally bad? Well, we checked.
When it comes to illegal immigration, the Italians are not letting it slide. The PM Giuseppe Conte alongside Matteo Salvini (who was a Deputy Prime Minister), has been trying to find a solution to the refugee problem for a while now. Sicily was a true centre of mass immigrant imports.
The Italian government is trying to block the process completely, and it’s faring fairly alright. Currently, the illegal immigration problem in Sicily is not a very hot issue.
The conservative government is doing everything in its power to block the ports, to disallow illegal transport ships to get to the coast. Matteo Salvini also reduced the maximal amount of refugees from Africa.
By the end of June 2019, news about the Sea Watch 3 ship struck the island, which illegally arrived at the Lampedusa island. The arrival of the ship was quickly protested against by the locals and the authorities. The captain of the ship was quickly accused of supporting illegal immigration and not doing his duty as per contract. The mentality is very similar in Sicily, so you don’t have to worry a thing.
