The Athens International Airport is the largest airport in Greece – if you’re heading towards the Athens area, you’ll no-doubt land there. As such, today we’ll go over the options you have for getting from the airport to the city centre.
The Athens Airport, commonly known as AIA, (IATA:ATH) began operation in 2001, replacing the old Athens Airport, ‘Ellinikon’. It’s located about 20 miles away from central Athens. How are we going to get there?
Getting from the airport to centre
The Athens Airport is, thankfully, very well connected to the city itself (as well as a few other towns and cities nearby). You can either use a metro, a railway, a bus or a taxi.
Metro and train
You can get to and from the airport by taking line 3 (blue), which runs from the Dimotiko Theatre to the airport. It’s a very convenient option, takes about an hour. You can find the current timetable here.
Alternatively, you can also use the suburban railway which connects the airport with the main station. You can find more information about your line options here.
Bus
You can also use a bus which can take you directly to the Syntagma square (the city centre). You have four options: lines X95, X96, X93 and X97. You can find all relevant timetables here. The journey, too, takes about an hour.
You can find the bus stop at the arrivals level.
Taxi
Of course, if you don’t feel like dealing with all these schedules and what not, you can also opt for a taxi. Taxis wait at the arrivals level, between exit 2 and 3. Taxis have a fixed price for the journey from the airport to the centre: €40 for a trip during the day (5am-midnight) and €55 for a night drive (midnight to 5am).
Athens Airport to Piraeus
If you’d like to actually get to Piraeus, not Athens, then you can either use the X96 bus line or metro line 1.

And here’s the plan of the Athens Airport itself – there, you’ll find refreshments, car rentals, toilets, luggage storages, a post office and an information desk. Outside, you have car parks, a taxi spot, a train stop and bus stops.
