The Catania–Fontanarossa Airport is, thankfully, very close to the city centre. Still, not close enough to just walk there with all your baggage. So what options do you have for getting to the centre? Can you find taxis, trains or buses at the Catania airport? We’ll go over that today.
Taxi or Uber
You can find taxis at the Catania airport which can take you straight to the city centre. The usual cost is about €29 and the ride takes 12 minutes. You’ll find them right outside the terminal.
Though there’s no Bolt in Sicily, you can actually find Ubers, though only Uber Blacks are available. That’s because the only way Uber could compromise to be allowed to function in Italy was to make sure that their vehicles wouldn’t endanger traditional taxis and their business. The way to do that was to make sure that Uber was only offering ‘luxury vehicles’, which Uber Blacks are. As such, Uber is going to be quite pricey in Catania as well, though it’s an option.
You may also see plenty of ‘unofficial’ transport offers. If you decide that you would like to take up one of them, be sure to agree on a price before getting into the car. Sometimes these people will even forcefully take your bag into the car, so please, do be careful and check the vibes before agreeing on anything if you’re desperate enough that you want to take your chances like that.
Trains
We sadly can’t recommend the train choice. The station is too far from the terminal and taking the train to the centre of Catania becomes completely unprofitable in terms of the total time it will take.
Buses
You can, however, totally take a bus, be it public transport, the AMT Alibus or other private buses. The city buses typically run every 20 minutes from 5am till midnight. To get to the airport, the bus goes around the whole centre starting from Stazione Centrale, goes under the Duomo, Borsellino Square, Lucia and goes towards Fontanarossa Airport. The ticket costs €4, valid for 90 minutes – free wi-fi is available on some buses.
Car
How far is the airport from the city? It is located practically in the centre, 4 miles from Piazza Duomo. Access by car is easy and you should follow the SS114 road if you want to reach Stazione Centrale or Giardino Pacini. The car parks are located in front of the terminal entrance, while rental companies are located literally next door.
