Are there mosquitoes on Corfu?

The Greek islands below the mainland, like Crete or Rhodes, are known for being quite rich in mosquitoes – is Crete dealt the same hand? Do you have to bring some repellents? Let’s take a look!

When is the mosquito season in Corfu?

Sadly, yes, Corfu has plenty of mosquitoes. They tend to be active in the high season, unless there’s a very hot and very dry period, as that tends to get rid of many of them. Mosquitoes need moisture to survive and breed – if there’s absolutely none, they’ll die out. Still, this doesn’t have to be rain, as a pool left by an overly zealous hotel gardener will do too. Corfu is also not as dry as Crete or Rhodes during summer and doesn’t have the same Meltemi wind which also helps a little. As such, you can expect to be annoyed by them most of the time.

How can you protect yourself?

For your hotel room, you can buy a mosquito repellent which you can plug in and it’ll release anti-mosquito vapours. There are even mobile devices which do the same for a given radius. Apart from that, you can buy yourself a repellent to apply to your skin – you can carry a 100ml bottle in your hand luggage. If you forget it, you can certainly find them in Corfu.

Otherwise, we stick to the base rules. Don’t leave the light on when the window’s open in the afternoon, use anti-mosquito curtains if you have them and apply products when leaving the room. If you don’t like the typical mosquito repellents, like the ones using DEET or picaridin, you can also use essential oils. Beware that you’ll have to reapply them often.
