Is Corfu safe?

Are you thinking of visiting Corfu but you’re not sure whether you’ll be able to feel safe there? Is it a good place for a solo traveler? Let’s take a look!

Safety in Corfu

Corfu is one of the safest holiday destinations in Greece. Thanks to the fact that Corfu is just generally kind of out of the way of everything, there’s simply little going on. Crime rates are low and Greeks are known for being nice and hospitable people. As such, though you should still exercise the commonsensical degree of caution, you don’t have to worry much. This also applies for solo travelers.

Stings

Instead of people, we’d recommend you watch out for nature on Corfu. Beware of stings of all kinds, especially from wasps and hornets and even more so if you’re allergic. Mosquitoes, though not so much a threat, can be a real nuisance on Corfu as well.

Jellyfish

You should also be careful on the beach – while sharks are not much an issue, watch out for jellyfish, as making contact with their tentacles can leave burns for a while. Same with sea urchins.

Scooters

Scooters are a very popular form of transport in Corfu (as with other Greek islands), hence why there’s a decently large number of scooter accidents on Corfu’s roads. Often the reason is simply carelessness and you may notice quite a bit of bedlam on the Greek road sometimes. As such, be careful if you intend to either use scooters or hire your own car.

Beware the sun

Corfu gets very, very warm in summer. We try to stress this every time we mention a Greek island that temperatures reaching 35 degrees and more are no joke – use sunscreen, take a hat with you and hydrate plenty. Take care of yourselves out there.

Summary

Corfu is a very safe place with only the most basic dangers that you could encounter on any such hot island. As such, you can relax with no need for excessive fretting at the back of your head. So go have that trip you’ve wanted for so long. You’ll be just fine.
