Five reasons why you should go to Cyprus in autumn!

Not a fan of scorching heats, yet you still want to visit Cyprus? Autumn may just be the perfect time for you! Today’s post will go over a few reasons why Cyprus in autumn is a great idea. We’ll also go over what weather you can expect in September, October and November. Should you go to Cyprus in autumn?

Harvest season

Autumn is the harvest season. What is being harvested here? Olives and grapes for the delicious Cypriot wine and oil. As you may know, the oldest wine in the world still being produced, Commandaria, is from Cyprus. And yes, you can taste it locally, especially during wine festivals such as the Limassol Festival Γιορτή του Κρασιού or the Pelendri Olive Festival. Each town also has its own small festival such as the Karob Festival in Peyia and Alone, the Pomegranate Festival in Ormideia or the Potato Festival in Xylofagou.

Weather and temperatures in autumn in Cyprus

Cyprus is a very hot region, as we’ve already gone over in our post about the weather in summer. Thankfully, temperatures start to get a bit milder in autumn. The later you go, the less extreme things will be – from the 31 degrees in September to 23 degrees in November. There’s also relatively little rain throughout autumn, and most that you may see is nearing the end of November.

Smaller crowds, fewer parties

An off-season trip also involves fewer tourists. Don’t like crowds? Fly between October and November. Temperatures still allow for swimming and there are far fewer people on the promenades. On top of that, you also give local hoteliers and hosts a chance to make money in the low season. There are also not as many tiring party boats either, so it’s more of a quiet peaceful time.

The tourist count drops from over 500,000 in July and August to 160,000 in November, so almost three times less.

Lower hotel prices

When to go to Cyprus if you want to save a bit on accommodation? Preferably at the end of October, as flat and hotel prices can be up to 30% lower. For a 2-room flat with a sea view near Paphos in October, we paid less than 170 pounds for 2 people for a fortnight. A great time to save some money on accommodation and everything else tourist-related.

Flamingos and baby sea turtles

This is also a great time for fauna lovers, as flamingos start popping up in Cyprus. You can see these beautiful shy birds on the salt lake of Limassol or the lake in Larnaca. If flamingos are not your vibe, you can also watch baby sea turtles and their nesting grounds on Lara beach. Remember that these places are the homes of these animals, so do behave appropriately.

Hot weather in Cyprus in September

September in Cyprus is still a very hot month. The average high temperatures are as high as 31 degrees Celsius. At night, these drop to ‘only’ 20 degrees. There are almost no rainy days, so an umbrella may at best help with the sun. It’s easily the warmest month in autumn and, really, is just a fourth month of summer in Cyprus.

You can still safely go swimming in November during the day in Cyprus, though you may need a jacket for the few colder nights. The average day temperatures are about 28 degrees, whereas nights drop down to 17 degrees Celsius. You may encounter a few rainy days, but don’t get too attached, as it’s still overwhelmingly sunny. The only reminder of winter is that the days are getting shorter.

The coldest month of autumn, where the temperatures are at mere 23 degrees Celsius average. The beginning of the month is still perfectly suitable for swimming in the sea. We, ourselves, chose a beach in Paphos in November and it was still great. Towards the end of the month, though, you have a greater chance of rain. We’d recommend an umbrella, it’ll come in handy whether it’s still sunny or already rainy. Do keep in mind that the days are getting shorter and shorter, so do consider getting up early to make the most of it.
