Few people go to Cyprus with their own car, though car hires are a popular choice. If you’re thinking of hiring a car, you may be wondering how to drive in Cyprus. Is the traffic right-hand or left-hand? What’s driving in Cyprus like? We’ll go over all of that in today’s short guide.
Cyprus has long been an area strongly influenced by Britain. One aspect that remains even today is that you drive on the left in Cyprus, marking Cyprus one of the few rarities of such traffic in Europe. For the forgetful, there are even signs put as reminders that you’re to pull over to the left side.
Road signs in Cyprus are similar to those in the UK. The rules of the road are also similar. We keep to the left side of the road and overtake from the right. What about Northern Cyprus though?
Northern Cyprus is an area of Turkish influence, but you drive on the same side of the road as in Southern Cyprus. Both Northern Cyprus and Southern Cyprus drive on the left side of the road, often, though not always, in a car with the steering wheel on the right. If you’re not accustomed to this type of driving, please do consider using public transport or taxis instead, as it may be very wonky at the beginning.
Do you need an international driving licence and a Green Card for Cyprus? Fortunately, no – if you’re driving your own car, you don’t need a Green Card, a normal driving licence is sufficient.
