Is Cyprus a part of the European Union?

Apart from being a great pick for a relatively cheap holiday trip, Cyprus is a bit of an odd case – it’s geographically a country in Asia, yet we consider it somewhat European culturally. As such, has the European Union recognised its European cultural tendencies as well? Is Cyprus, southern or northern, a part of the European Union?

Yes, yes it is. And, frankly, it’s no news at this point. Cyprus joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, alongside Poland. Yet, if you’ve been checking anything out about Cyprus, then you may have noticed that not all of Cyprus is in the EU. Why?

Well, because Cyprus is divided into the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus, the latter being under Turkish control. As such, this part is not a member of the EU, just like Turkey isn’t. There’s also a UN-controlled buffer zone on the island which, too, isn’t a part of the European Union. If Turkey were to theoretically join the EU, this situation may change, but that’s not likely anytime soon.
