Is Turkey a member of the Schengen Area?

The Schengen Agreement, signed in 1985, is one of the most important agreements for the citizens of mainland Europe. It abolished border controls between the signatory member countries. Thanks to it, countries such as Germany, Iceland, Switzerland and many others can travel through each other’s borders without the traditional procedures. Is Turkey among these countries? Is Turkey a member of the Schengen Area?

Turkey and Schengen

Sadly, for those who would want control-free passage to Turkey, Turkey is not in the Schengen Area. This means that there are border controls whether you go by plane or land. Our travel documentation will be examined and our luggage may also be subject to investigation.

Will Turkey join Schengen?

At the moment there are no such indications that Turkey will be a part of the Schengen Area in the future. This means that controls for crossing land, air and sea borders will not be abolished in the country anytime soon.
