Early autumn is a very warm time in Istanbul. Temperatures range from 21 to 25 degrees Celsius on average. Statistically, there may be a few rainy days in September. October is also pleasant with temperatures around 18 degrees Celsius. November heralds the approaching winter, as the temperatures can drop to 10 degrees Celsius. If you are going to Istanbul in autumn, it’s a good idea to take an umbrella with you.

Istanbul is a magical place at the crossroads of cultures, the cradle of many cultures and civilisations. In autumn, the city’s already vibrant facade becomes even more colourful.

A time of major cultural events!

Dealing with the MANY ice-gream gentlemen across Istanbul is a cultural attraction in and of itself! 🙂

Istanbul’s actually home to many cultural events in autumn. For instance, you have the Istanbul Biennial – a world-renowned international contemporary art event that takes place from 14 September to 10 November. Interestingly, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts has been organising this event continuously since 1987. The Chill Out Festival, one of the most important (and first) music festivals in Turkey, also kicks off on 15th September. In general, there are many music festivals organised in Istanbul in autumn.

Stambuł Park

When visiting Istanbul in autumn, you simply have to visit one of the city’s many parks. The spectacle of nature there is magnificent, with autumn leaves adorning both the trees and the foresty park walkways. Turks love nature and spending their free time in its bosom. It’s a major part of their culture – to go to one of the many parks and, depending on the weather, have a picnic, barbecue or sometimes even a bonfire (in specially designated areas). One of the most beautiful parks, for example, is the Atatürk Arboretum. There’s an entry fee, though it’s a symbolic 2 TL.

The best time for a cruise across the Bosphorus Strait

Rejs Stambuł

According to the locals and regulars in Istanbul, September is the best time to take a cruise along the magical Bosphorus Strait. It’s a chance to see the city from a completely different perspective. At this time of year, the ferries and ships are not so crowded and the weather is just perfect. This means that it’s not too hot and there is a nice warm wind. Don’t worry, the average costs are also perfectly manageable.

Is November cold in Istanbul? Well, the temperatures certainly drop quite a bit here, with the average fluctuating around 9 degrees Celsius. The winter slowly crawls around, and Istanbul becomes… nostalgic. Turks love to celebrate the change of seasons. The streets are filled with vendors selling hot chestnuts and special warming drinks are on the menu of cosy cafés, full of cushions and books. It’s still a great time to visit – there are virtually no queues and most of Istanbul’s best sights are indoors. You can sense the melancholy of autumn departing in the city, which is best absorbed with a steaming cup of tea in hand.
