Where is Milan located? Does it have access to the sea?

Milan is the second largest city in Italy, an absolute capital of fashion. You likely couldn’t have not heard of Milan, though you may not know much about it beyond that it does, indeed, exist somewhere and it has that fancy shopping gallery that people take photos inside of. As such, let’s cover the absolute basics today. Where is Milan located? Does it have access to the sea?

Where is Milan?

Milan is located in northern Italy, in the region of Lombardy. It’s the capital of and the largest city in the region. It’s surrounded by three rivers: Adda, Po and Ticino, though no major river goes through Milan. Instead, Milan has navigli, an ancient network of interconnected canals. The city lies on the north-western end of the Po Valley.

You can reach Milan by plane, either through the Malpensa Airport or the airport in Bergamo. To the north of Milan, you have the Alps, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. Even further to the north, you have the border with Switzerland, 25 miles away from Milan.

Now, what about the sea? Can you go to Milan for a beach holiday? The closest sea is the Ligurian Sea, about 85 miles away from Milan if you take the A7 motorway to Genoa. It’s a two hour drive from the city centre to the coast. It’s 160 miles to the Adriatic Sea and about three hours worth of a drive if you want to get to Venice. As such, if you want some water in your trip, you may want to consider the lakes north of Milan instead, much closer than any of the seas.
