Madeira has been consistently growing in popularity every year. Funchal gets swarmed every year, and no wonder, as the Island of Eternal Spring sure has great weather conditions all year round. Thanks to that, the island is known for excellent conditions for flora to thrive in, like in the Monte Palace Gardens. If you’d like to visit the local botanical garden, we’ll examine how much such an endeavour will cost you.
How much does it cost to enter the Monte Gardens?
Monte Palace Tropical Gardens entry fee
Monte is a suburb of Funchal that is home to said gardens. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a real treat for people who simply enjoy spending time in beautiful green places, though also a great place for those actually interested in botany. The garden is open from 9:30am to 6:00pm every day except Christmas. There’s also a museum, open from 10:00am to 4:30pm, where you can see various sculptures and a collection of various minerals from all over the world.
The gardens cover a massive area, you can easily spend several hours exploring the place. You’ll find plants from all over the world here, as well as a lake fed by a waterfall. The whole area has been intricately designed and the result is stunning. Entry to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens costs €12,50 for those aged 15 and over. Children under 15 accompanied by an adult can enter for free.
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is actually considered one of the 13 most beautiful gardens in the whole world. We’d recommend you wear some comfortable shoes as the terrain is certainly not easy and can be extra slippery after rainfall.
How do you get to the Monte Gardens?
How much will the train ride cost you?
The fastest and most impressive means of transport at your disposal will be the Teleferico funicular. It leaves from Campo Almirante Reis in Funchal and can take you right up to the garden entrance. The journey takes about 10 minutes and you can enjoy the view of the bay and the valley during it. The one-way train ride costs €12,50 for an adult, €6,50 for children between 7-14 years old and nothing at all for younger children. A round-trip ticket is more efficient though, as it’s €18 for an adult and €9 for children 7-14.
These certainly aren’t cheap, but the experience of getting to the gardens by a funicular is spectacular. Mostly because Madeira is just a treasure trove when it comes to natural beauty. The Monte Gardens is a must-see for when you’re in Funchal and want to get the full feel of the city. For the record, if you want a cheaper alternative to the funicular, there are also buses which can take you to Monte, but it’s nowhere near as fun of an experience then.
