Is Naples safe to visit?

Naples is among the most iconic cities to visit in Italy, yet it’s shrouded by a concerning reputation. What about reality? Is it safe in Naples? We’ll go over that today.

Safety in Naples

Though you may have heard of Naples as a crime-riddled place full of thugs and murder, it’s obviously not so bad. Millions of tourists wouldn’t be visiting it every year if people would be getting murdered there. In reality, it’s a decently safe place for tourists , though we wouldn’t want to lure you into thinking that there’s nothing to look out for.

Naples does have a crime problem – most of it is unrelated to tourists, though pickpockets, mugging and scams do still occur.

Crime in Naples

The predominant thing to look out for in Naples is pickpockets and muggers. For the first one, you should avoid squeezing into large groups and be careful in public transport. Preferably, also avoid carrying too many valuables on you in the first place and be mindful of your phone and wallet.

Apart from that, you may want to watch out for scooters flying through the streets – not just because of their pace but also because it’s a common mugging tactic, snatching bags and purses from pedestrians. Carry your bags close to you, preferably on the side of the buildings, not the street.

If you’re already versed in typical tourist dangers, then you’re likely already wired to look out for all of these in some capacity – Naples is generally a safe place as long as you use your common sense, don’t get too distracted and don’t expose yourself too much. If you’d prefer to choose safer neighbourhoods, just in case, then Chiaia Chic, Margellina and the Posillipo District are all good choices with relatively low crime rates. On the other side, Scampia is the most infamous district of Naples, closely followed by Forcella.

Apart from crime, we’d also recommend you look out on the roads. Reckless drivers are a very common sight in Naples, so be careful when crossing the street or simply walking by a busy road.
