Are there dangerous spiders in Mallorca?

Though for some beautiful and graceful, spiders appear to have always inspired dread and repulsion for many, with arachnophobia being one of the most common phobias in the world. As such, don’t fret, we get if you may not want to have your holiday trip ruined by them. That’s why in today’s post we’ll inspect the spider situation in Mallorca.

Are there spiders on Mallorca? How likely is it that I will meet one?

To cut to the chase, if you’re among those who get stressed out by spiders, we’ll have to worry you a little right off the bat – there are spiders in Mallorca, quite a few of them in fact.

Mallorca offers very good living conditions for spiders – the Mediterranean climate is generally favourable for them. Mallorca is, as such, home to both small spiders, the typical cellar dwellers we are all accustomed to, as well as the larger ones, living in the wetter and shadier parts of the island. Among these lives Lycosa subhirsuta, a decently large species sometimes referred to as the ‘true tarantula’ (though not actually related to that family directly).

So yes, there are spiders in Mallorca. But are there any actually dangerous ones?

Are spiders in Mallorca dangerous to humans? Are there venomous spiders in Mallorca?

Most spiders in Mallorca are completely harmless to humans. Though true that, for instance, the aforementioned Lycosa subhirsuta is equipped with venomous fangs, their venom does not pose an actual threat to human life and the spider only bites when feeling threatened. So no, spiders in Mallorca are not actually dangerous to humans. You don’t need to worry about them posing genuine danger. It is more likely that the local sea life, jellyfish or sea urchins, may cause you harm than spiders. Thus, though you may still encounter them here or there, you can at least rest a tiny bit easier knowing that they’re not out to get you.
