Is Valentine’s Day celebrated in Cyprus? Weddings, love curses and trivia

The island of Cyprus actually has an alternative name – the Island of Aphrodite, the goddess of love. As such, it sounds like a great spot to celebrate Valentine’s Day – but do Cypriots actually celebrate it?

Thankfully, yes, they do. Cyprus celebrates Valentine’s day in much the same way that we’re familiar with, though the location is that extra spice. Cypriots celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th – the typical good taste in Cyprus is buying a gift, flowers, going on a date or doing whatever you feel like your partner would love.

Aphrodite’s Rock

It was here, in Petra tou Romiou on Cyprus, where Aphrodite, the goddess of love herself, emerged from the sea. The spot is one of our must-see spots in Cyprus. The rock itself may not be particularly spectacular, but it’s certainly a perfect place for celebrating your loved one. If you don’t feel like visiting this one, there’s a number of places associated with Aphrodite in Cyprus: the Baths of Aphrodite on the Akamas peninsula or the Temple of Aphrodite in Paphos just to name a few.

A wedding in Cyprus

Yes, you can totally have a wedding in Cyprus. Many places offer this ‘service’ on beaches in Ayia Napa or Cape Greco, for instance. You can see how these venues look in our list of the most beautiful spots in Cyprus. A wedding for around 80 people in Cyprus costs around €13,000, plus around €150 for the wedding ceremony itself, €1000 for a photographer, around €500 for a DJ and an undisclosed amount for other additives. There are also whole packages for a beach wedding in Cyprus which start at €5000 for the ceremony.

Sexual curses

Maybe you’re not really in the mood for Valentine’s though. We get it, it be like that sometimes. Well, Cyprus is also home to one of the oldest sexual curses in written word on an artefact from the 7th century. A curse tablet has been found near Limassol with the inscription: “May your penis hurt when you make love.” Simple, elegant, straight to the point. Not that we’d encourage it, but who knows the extent of its power.

The Love Bridge in Ayia Napa

Back to not cursing your loved one though, we have another greatly symbolic spot for a date – the Bridge of Lovers at Cape Greco. It’s a great spot for viewing sunsets with your loved one.

Should you go to Cyprus for Valentine’s Day?

So should you fly to Cyprus for Valentine’s Day? Certainly! It’s one of the best choices for a romantic getaway. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises, lots of attractions, lovely views and beautiful beaches. On top of that, February is certainly much warmer here than it is in our realms and some even say that it’s warm enough for a swim (if you’re really daring).
