Is Zakynthos safe to visit?

Zakynthos is well known for its great beaches, glorious sunny weather and warm waters. But is it as much a pocket paradise as it appears? Are you safe in Zakynthos? Can you travel to Zakynthos alone? Let’s take a look at the safety situation on the island.

Is Zakynthos safe?

As with other Greek islands, we can say that Zakynthos is a very safe place. Crime rates are low here and you don’t have to worry much when going on an evening walk. Of course, you still have to use common sense – it’s not like there are no pickpockets on Zakynthos at all. Like mosquitoes, they’re everywhere and you always have to keep them in mind. Just like you don’t turn on the lamp too early with an open window, you don’t leave your valuables around, or else a mosquito will come in. Either keep a good watch on them or leave them in the hotel room.

It’s also decently safe for solo travellers – of course, we still have to sadly remind you to be wary of whom you’re hanging around during your trip, as creeps are everywhere as well, though Greeks are typically very nice people and tourists tend to report mainly positive experiences from Zakynthos.

Healthcare in Zakynthos

Before you depart, we recommend getting healthcare cover abroad – if you’re from the EU, this is covered with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Do remember that if a service is paid in Greece, you’ll have to pay anyway. If you’re from the UK, you can check out the NHS’ guide on getting healthcare cover abroad here

Road safety

Like with most Greek islands, it’s best explored by car. Be careful, though, as not all roads on Zakynthos are in their prime condition. Also, watch out for drivers, as there are some brave passionate souls in Greece – if you see someone is trying to overtake you, it’s good manners to hide to the side and let them pass. You’ll see lots of those. You may want to consider insurance for your car too.

Also, use a map if you’re driving. Many roads are not marked at all or the signposts are only in Greek.

What else to look out for on Zakynthos?

Though you don’t have to worry about sharks on Zakynthos, do watch out for jellyfish and sea urchins while on the beach. Wear strong sunscreen and drink plenty of water, as the heat gets quite intense on the island. Preferably, get a hat too.
