How many days do you need in Catania?

If you’re interested in going to Catania, you may want to know how many days you would need for such a trip, whether you want just a short brief or a thorough exploration. Is one or two days enough in Catania? What can you see in a week? We’ll examine all of that in today’s post.

Of course, we can’t give you a definitive answer to the primary question. It always depends on your preferences and desires for your holiday and every option offers you something. We’ll merely go through what you can see in a given set of days and you’ll have to judge which one is right for you.

What can you see in Catania in a day?

Katania
The centre of Catania

You can see quite a lot in a day in Catania. The route would mostly revolve around the centre of Catania, where you would stroll from attraction to attraction on foot. Most of the main sites in Catania are quite close together, so it’s relatively convenient. Here’s our suggested list:

  • Catania Cathedral: It’s located in the heart of the city and is one of the most important monuments of Catania. Here, you can admire the beautiful Baroque architectural elements.
  • Fontana dell’Elefante: Another icon of Catania, located in Piazza del Duomo. The elephant fountain is one of the most popular places to see in the city.
  • Castello Ursino: This castle, dating back to the 12th century, is located in the heart of the city and is one of the most beautiful sites of Catania. Today, the castle houses a museum where you can see many interesting exhibits related to the history of the city.
  • Catania fish market: You can feel the real atmosphere of the city here. You can buy fresh seafood here and many traditional Sicilian products
  • Porta Uzeda: A beautiful gate located in the Piazza del Duomo. You can find it via the street between the town hall and the Diocesan Museum
  • Bellini Gardens: A green spot on the map of Catania. These gardens are a fantastic place to relax in the shade when the unbearable heat hits.
  • Massimo Bellini Theatre: The wonderful Massimo Bellini Theatre is located in Piazza Vincenzo Bellini.

These are just a few of our suggestions, but you can see many other beautiful places on your stroll. If you have more time, we’d certainly recommend staying for longer than one day, though.

What can you see in Catania in two days?

Catania and Etna

There’s much more to see in Catania than what we proposed for Day 1. Let’s keep the first day the same and head onto what you can see on the second day.

Day 2:

  • Of course, we have to see Etna. It’s one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. It’s a must-see in Catania (unless you really don’t have the time). You can hike there on your own or choose a guided tour. You can read more about Etna here
  • Taormina is a beautiful town located 45 minutes by car from Catania. You can see the Teatro Greco there, the beautiful gardens of the Villa Comunale or enjoy the beaches in the area. You can read more about Taormina here

Both places are in one direction, north of Catania, so you can combine them into one trip.

What can you see in Catania in three days?

Katania w 3 dni
Catania, Syracuse and Mount Etna

How about an extra day? With three full days, we’d wager you can see most of the main sites in Catania. Here’s our suggested itinerary.

Day 1 and 2 stay as proposed above.

Day 3:

  • You can visit the centre of Syracuse (island of Ortigia) and the Archaeological Park of Syracuse. You can easily get here by train from Catania. If you wish to learn more about what you can see in Syracuse, click here.
  • There’s also Noto, a beautiful baroque town southwest of Catania. It’s easily accessible from Syracuse via train, though they tend to run quite infrequently, so do plan your trip in advance. If you’re planning a whole day of sightseeing, you can squeeze both of these in one day.

Of course, these are just our suggestions. You can find many alternative routes or skip all of the mainstream stuff altogether and just go hiking into the unknown. This is what we’d recommend to a regular tourist who just wants to see the main stuff in Catania, and this plan will certainly do just that. If you prefer, you can also take the plan for day 2 or 3 and skip day 1. If you wish to learn more about what you can see in Catania in general, or you have more than three days on your hands, we’ve got a list for you too.
