Can you drink tap water in Albania? Is it safe?

Albania is becoming a popular tourist destination that many people are discovering only now. If you’re thinking of visiting Albania or, perhaps, you’re already in your hotel of choice, you may also want to know whether you can drink tap water in Albania. Is tap water in Albania safe? Do you have to buy bottled water? We’ll examine exactly that in today’s post.

Even despite the efforts to overhaul the sewage system, many organisations advise against drinking tap water in Albania. Local Albanians tend to buy bottled water and we’d recommend you also follow suit, just to be on the safe side. It’s unfortunate, especially as Albania is a hot country, so you’ll need to hydrate a lot. There are, however, exceptions to this rule.

Where can you drink tap water in Albania?

Some mountainous regions have really good tap water that is safe to drink directly from the tap. How can you find it? It is usually best to ask the local Albanians if the water in a particular place is drinkable. Albanians are very friendly and helpful people, so they’ll likely give you a lot of useful information about the state of water in Albania.

Still, you may not be anywhere near that region on your holidays, and looking for it is a hassle in and of itself. Prices in Albania aren’t too terrible, so we’d say just buy bottled water (or some great Albanian wine! 🙂 ) and bypass this problem.
