Why you should go to Sicily in summer

Are you thinking of giving Sicily a go, you’re just not sure when? We’ve already written about autumn and spring, let’s cover summer next. What weather can you expect in summer? Isn’t it too hot? We’ll go over all of that and more today.

Sicily’s summer temperatures

Though not as hot as the Spanish Andalusia, Sicily is a very hot region in summer, perfect for heat lovers. What temperatures can you expect? Certainly regular spikes well above 30°C. In July and August, the 30 degree mark becomes the average. Better get your sunscreen ready.

Sicily’s water temperature and beaches

Of course, it’s not just the air temperature that is very high in Sicily but also the temperatures of the sea. In July and August, water temperatures can average at 25-27°C. These are splendid months for swimming at the beach.

Frequent flights to Sicily

Though such popular tourist destinations may often suffer from heavily contested spots on planes, Sicily has enough connections to fit all. This goes both for budget flights and the more expensive options for the posh folks among you.

Summer activities in Sicily

The weather also offers ideal conditions for all sorts of activities in Sicily. You can go on a cruise around the neighbouring islands, climb Mount Etna, observe all sorts of aquatic animals (including sharks and dolphins!) and more. Not to mention the Aperol-fueled parties, if that’s your jam. 🙂

Weather in May in Sicily

If you would like to visit Sicily right before the formal summer season, May is also perfectly fine, though nowhere easily the coldest month of the bunch. The historical average temperatures are about 23°C, though you may encounter spikes to 30-35°C as well (as in 2022). The beginning of the month will be quite a bit colder on average as well, so plan accordingly.

You can expect night temperatures to be around 15°C, so take a jacket for the evenings. The sea is a bit cold still, at 18°C, so perhaps don’t plan beach holidays for May. There are only about 3 rainy days that month, so don’t worry about umbrellas.

Weather in June in Sicily

June opens our formal season with an average of 27°C throughout the day, with highs commonly reaching the 30°C mark (and a max of 39°C in 2022). Nights are already pleasant, at 19°C, and you can pretty much forget rain altogether in June. You may want an umbrella along with your sunscreen, but merely for the heat.

Weather in July in Sicily

July jumps to an average of 30°C throughout the day. Nights are at 21°C average, meaning what other countries may expect throughout the day in summer. The sea is already splendid, at 25°C. If June was practically rainless, then July is pretty much a drought. It’s the season of air conditioning and lots of ice cream.

Weather in August in Sicily

August is practically identical to July, only about a degree warmer at night and in the sea. You may encounter one more day of rain than in June and July, but that’s about it, really. It’s still very much a scorch.

As you can see, Sicily is insanely warm in summer and this might be both a blessing and a curse, depending on the tourist. If you’re starved for some good ol’ heat after damp and cold months of winter and spring, then Sicily will certainly welcome you warmly. If you’d rather do something more active, like lots of hiking, you may want to reconsider whether summer isn’t too hot for that.
