Though not the entirety of spring is all that suitable for swimming and lounging, May is already warm enough to where you can certainly both take a dip and sunbathe a while. The sea isn’t warm enough for long swims, at around 18°C in May, though it’s decent enough for a short one.

If you want to see the greenest Sicily gets, you should certainly come over in spring. Flowers start to bloom after the rainy winter and the island turns into a place of renewal. It’s also a particularly beautiful time of year for photo sessions, if you’re into that.

If you appreciate the aforementioned beautiful natural views, warm temperatures and you like hiking, then spring would be ideal. Why? Because summers can get so hot that long hikes are basically impossible. Spring is warm enough for a nice hike but not too hot to make it tiring in the long run. Sicily offers many great trails, especially in Riserva Dello Zingaro or near Mt Etna.

Even if you’re not a believer yourself, you can still consider that time just for the atmosphere and to admire the effort that so many people put into these celebrations. Sicily is often associated with its high temperatures, and spring is no stranger to this either. The beginning of spring won’t be all that hot, but May can already see 25-30 degrees Celsius. As a general rule of thumb, you should assume the east of the island a tiny bit warmer than the west – as such, Catania will be slightly warmer than Palermo. It’s also not too rainy, so most of your stay should be nice and sunny. We’ll break down the expected temperatures for each month below.

What’s the weather like in March? It’s the coolest spring month in Sicily, though the average temperatures are still around 17°C. At night, it tends to drop to 9°C, so do take a jacket with you for the chilly evenings. You may also encounter some rain, about 8 days, though these will be short and mild. We wouldn’t recommend swimming yet.

In April, the average temperatures jump to around 20°C, though the end of the month may be warmer. Rainfall will also be considerably lesser. Nights will continue to be quite cold, at about 11°C average. It’s a great month for hiking, as many days can go up to stable 20-24 degrees. It’s also perfect for exploring the city if you’re into slightly milder temperatures.

As we’ve mentioned, May can get very hot already, with a select few days in the past years coming to 30°C. The beginning of the month can be quite tame still while you may want sunscreen for the latter half. Also, rain is very unlikely in May, so an umbrella can merely protect you from the sun. 🙂
As you can see, the temperatures are already pleasant enough for most of what you’d want to do in Sicily. It’s certainly a pleasant escape from our chilly springs and can be a great way to evade the high season.
