If you’ve heard of Pisa, you’ve heard of it because of its Leaning Tower. And no wonder, as it’s such an oddly comical sight. As a result, Pisa became one of the most visited cities in Tuscany. Though most people just opt to have a picture posing against nothing in front of the tower, how much will it cost you to enter the leaning thing itself?
Leaning Tower of Pisa
Basics
The Leaning Tower, 55 metres tall, is located in the cathedral square in Pisa. It’s one of the most recognisable buildings in all of Italy. And, as you would imagine, it’s crowded all year round. If you’re planning to take a photo by miming, it might be genuinely difficult to find an empty space in front of it.
The Leaning Tower began its construction in 1173. Mere five years later, once the builders got to the second floor, the tower began to sink a little. This was because the foundation was much too weak for something of this scale. Here, the construction was halted, and this was a crucial step in allowing the tower not to collapse. In over half a century that the construction sat, sunken, the soil beneath hardened and settled, allowing for the tower to stay as it is. In 1233, the construction was renewed and finished in 1372.
How much does a ticket to the Leaning Tower cost?
Ticket prices
We’d recommend actually entering the Leaning Tower only if you don’t mind that you’ll invariably feel a bit like you’re falling. The attraction is not recommended for people with physical disabilities, as it’s a slippery climb. Entry ticket costs €20 and you can buy it on the official site here. You’ll have to specify the date and time and, as you might imagine, tickets can be quite sought after in the high season.
Though admission to the cathedral is free, the other monuments around it are not. You’ll find tickets for all the options on the same site linked above.
Pisa is a tiny city, so you can certainly see the whole thing in a day. It’s well worth the effort though, as it’s a magical thing to see in real life.
