The history of Circus Maximus dates back to the 4th century BC, with the last race taking place in 549 AD. The arena could hold up over 150,000 spectators, making it one of the largest stadiums in the world at the time.

Over the centuries, the circus fell into disrepair. It was heavily damaged by fires twice, in 31 AD and 64 AD, in the Great Fire of Rome. It was restored and it continued to function until the 6th century. Afterwards, it was largely unused for a long time. In the 12th century, it was used as a market garden. It later became a quarry in the renaissance. Now, it serves as a public park in Rome.
