It’s certainly no Cyprus, but Ancona is still in southern Europe and that comes with its fair share of warmth. You can expect temperatures to range from 10 to 18°C in winter. There’s a small chance of temperatures going below zero, mostly at night.

If you’re looking for a relaxing quiet place, then you can spend the winter walking across Ancona’s national park overlooking its beautiful beaches and wooded hills, the Parco Regionale Naturale del Conero. There are almost 20 paths to follow here, though some have been closed off by the Park authorities on account of safety (mainly the cliffsides).

If you like seaside towns but you get quickly tired by swathes of tourists, then winter is an excellent time for Ancona. There are very few tourists, both in the centre and on beaches. Though Christmas may see a small bump, January and February are safe times to visit in regards to tourist counts.

Fewer tourists also means that prices for accommodation, attractions and other services go down as well. Select accommodation can be half the price in the low season. Be on the lookout for such bargains on booking sites.

Flights tend to also be cheaper, same with souvenirs and what not. Do remember, however, that there’s always a trade-off – some establishments may be closed for winter due to a lack of traffic.

If you don’t mind the small bump in tourist counts and prices, you can also visit Ancona for Christmas! You’ll be able to try Frustingo here, which, according to some, is the oldest Christmas dessert in the world. It originated from the Etruscans – later, it was adopted by Romans and, of course, the people of Marche. Apart from that, the city has a wonderful atmosphere during Christmas. You can expect the average temperatures to be about 10°C, though warm days can get up to 18°C. Nights are at a survivable 5°C. It does rain quite a bit, though these tend to be relatively mild, with December already being the rainiest of the three. Still, compared to our winters, it’s decently warm.

Temperatures do drop a tiny bit in January, down to an average of 9°C. The average night temperatures are at 3°C, though you can sometimes see it go below zero. In general, though temperatures do stay above 10 degrees regularly and you can even see a few days jump to 16-18°C. It’ll still rain a little, so take your umbrellas.

February tends to be quite similar to January – last year, it was a tiny bit colder, while in 2022, one day reached 20°C. Still, same deal. Cold nights, quite a bit of rain, decently warm days.

As you can see, winter in Ancona isn’t incredibly hot or anything, but it’s still quite a bit warmer than our winters and is warm enough for exploration and simply relaxing in Ancona’s beautiful national park. You’ll also invariably find way fewer tourists and the trip will cost you significantly less (unless it’s Christmas).
